VEHICULAR FERRIES

The necessity for an improvement in the facilities in service given by the ferry company for vehicular transport has been obvious for a long time. Lately, with the increased allowance in petrol, queues are becoming longer and delays frequent Surely we realise something must be done, and quickly. A bridge has a great deal to commend it, but why not consider a tunnel? We have the equipment in the country to complete such a project, and Mr. Semple is well versed in such an undertaking. It would provide employment for returned men, and as a ■ rehabilitation scheme certainly should receive early consideration. The country through which the tunnel would be driven is excellent and should present little difficulty. When one considers the Mersey, the various Thames tunnels, and those under the Hudson in New York, there is little reason why we in 'Auckland should not have such facilities. Our ferry service is inadeI quate, and expansion in the north warrants such expenditure. The tunnel should be a Government undertaking. Whether or not it is profitable with the aid of toll fees is another matter, but surely we are progressive enough to realise we cannot put up with such inconvenience as is thrust upon us at the present time.
