MARINER'S DEATH
CAPTAIN R. C. HAMMOND
Well-known in New Zealand shipping circles, Captain Rowland Christian Hammond, of Ponsonby, general manager of the Northern Steamship Company, Limited, has died at the age of 71 years. Captain Hammond returned to Auckland only last weekend from a health trip to Australia. . Born and educated in Auckland, Captain Hammond served in sailing vessels in his early years and later became master of the tug Sterling,
which was employed in towing into ICaipara Harbour sailing vessels which carried timber from the Northern Wairoa mills. He was also for many years master of the Melanesian Mission steamer Southern Cross 111. Captain Hammond later became manager of the Kaipara Steamship Company before succeeding Mr. C. Ransom as general manager of the Northern Steamship Company. He was also a director of Sanford, Ltd., Senior Foundry, Ltd., and the United Repairing Co., Ltd., and a member of the Employers' Association and New Zealand Shipowners' Federation. When a resident of Helensville, Captain Hammond was a keen yachtsman and tennis player. He is survived by his wife and two sons.
