EMPTY PRODUCE MARKETS
GROWERS MAKE PROTEST
P.A. WELLINGTON, Monday. Most of Wellington's fruit and vegetable markets were nearly empty of produce to-day as a result of Chinese and European growers diverting their supplies to the co-operative concern of Market Gardeners, Ltd. This was done as a protest against other markets charging commission on both produce and containers. The growers contended that as containers are chargeable to the retailers by Government order, there is no selling or auctioneering transaction involved, and therefore no commission should be charged. Market Gardeners, Ltd., has been charging commission on the contents only. Other auctioneering firms are reported to be making efforts to secure supplies from further afield in case the present policy of withholding produce from their markets continues.
