PAY FOR HOLIDAYS
CASUAL WORKERS' CLAIMS
Cashing in on holiday cards at post offices *throughout New Zealand has been in progress since the beginning of August, and at -the larger offices a score or more cards are presented each day. The average total at the Chief Post Office is about 30 daily. The cards are held by casual workers, whose employment is less than three months in each job. Week by week stamps are affixed by the employer, equal to one-twenty-fifth of the'worker's pay, and at the end of a year the amount may be collected. Some casual labourers, whose changes of employment have been frequent, have had several cards during the first year the scheme has been in operation. Among those whose employment has changed most often are men who have had casual "work on the .waterfront. As the rate of holiday pay is equal to about two weeks' wages a year the amount collectable at the end of twelve months generally runs into double figures, after deduction of social and national security taxes at the rate "of 2/6 in the pound. • If employment is continuous for more than three months cash payment is made to the worker, and if employment is permanent two weeks' annual holiday are provided by the employer on full pay, in terms of the Holidays Act, 1944.
