UNION MAKES REPLY
CHALLENGE TO DEBATE "If Mr. Wales will tell me the hold he refers to, and the date of the trip, I will undertake to debate publicly the matter with him and expose the statement for the scurrilous thing it is," said Mr. H. Barnes, president of the Auckland Waterside Workers' Union, this morning. He mentioned that between 500 and 600 members of his union were returned servicemen. The number of men employed in a gang in Auckland differed from that in Fiji, said Mr. Barnes. Workers here were restricted to six men to a hold, whereas in Fiji 30 men worked each hold. This would account for the seemingly large difference in cargo , handled in an hour. "Some people holding even higher rank than Mr. Wales have paid high tribute to the efforts of their fellow workers, who have handled the terrific tonnage of shipping that has passed through this port in the last four or five years," Mr. Barnes concluded.
