MAORI HOUSING
LARGER VOTE SUGGESTED
NATIVE MEMBER'S COMMENT Parliamentary Reporter WELLINGTON, this day. Wretched Maori housing was the real cause of much sickness, and if the scourge of tuberculosis were to be cured, start must be made from the angle of better accommodation, said Mr. T. Omana (Govt., Eastern Maori) in the House of Representatives to-day.
Much more could have been done for the Maori, people in the past. They had their own forests, containing much milling timber, and were anxious to see mills set up that they could operate themselves. Timber thus gained would not only make nouses for the Maoris cheaper, but would also help towards meeting the needs of the pakeha. The whole problem was lack of finance, and he hoped that this year the Budget would contain a much larger vote for Maori housing than that. given last year. It was only by giving the children a good start that a healthy race could be built up.
