COUNTRY TROTTING

TRANSPORT PROBLEM PLEA FOR MORE PERMITS Special. WELLINGTON, this day. A plea for more permits for country clubs was made at the annual meeting of delegates to the New Zealand Trotting Conference yesterday by Mr. J. B. Carr (Nelson), who moved that in the event of additional permits being granted for the 1945-46 season the allocation should be confined to country clubs only, and that clubs which had suffered a 100 per cent cut be given priority. After discussion, support for the proposal was given in the form of a recommendation to the executive. If carried by the conference the matter might be impossible of executon, said the president, Mr. H. F. Nicoll. Two or three clubs, including Cheviot and Kaikoura, were unable to race under the present restrictions, and the Minister of Internal Affairs, Mr. W. E. Parry, had made it plain that if any extra permits were granted racing and trotting conferences must give an undertaking that they would not ask for extra special trains or other transport. How some country clubs would be able to carry on under those conditions it was difficult to see. He thought the motion was a trifle too drsstic. Mr. W. S. Bennett (Kaikoura) said his club could not race unless transport facilities were available. If pushed into the position where they had to hold a meeting next season, and if transport were not available, the meeting would very likely be run at a loss. Mr. Nicoll said the main point to be considered was how to carry on the sport, and it could not be carried on if country clubs had been civen their usual representation. Iney had to cater for owners and trainers by looking after clubs giving the biggest stakes. ' TROTTING DATES Special. WELLINGTON, this day.
