CLUBS AND SOCIETIES

Parnell Old Folks' Association—A social afternoon was recently held in the gymnasium room of the New Zealand Institute for the Blind. Each month members receive a small birthday anniversary gift, which is made by the committee members. Mrs. Ha Worster, the programme convener, assisted by Miss Elizabeth Smart, was responsible for the afternoon's entertainment.

New Women's Club. —Mr. James Wylie, in the course of an address on "The Disease of. Discouragement," stressed the importance of mental preparation by study and reflection for the return of sons and husbands from the war zones. He said, "So many do not give this matter a thought until the arrival home of the serviceman, and therefore are unable to give encouragement and co-operation, much as they desire to help. Real rehabilitation commences when parents and wives are alive to the significance of the right personal attitudes and responsibilities, which count for much more than maudlin sentimentality." The president, Mrs. R. J. Roberts, presided.

St. Andrew's Auxiliary. — The Mayoress, Mrs. J. A. C. Allum, was guest of honour at the monthly At Home and was piped to the platform by Miss Jean Powelly. The president, Mrs. J. I. Shields, presented Mrs. Allum and Mrs. R. Fletcher, an old member who had just celebrated her 55th wedding anniversary, with floral tributes.
