MINISTER LAUNCHES DRIVE
A suggestion that New Zealand should provide 1,000,0001b of clothing for distribution among the people of the liberated European countries, was made by the Minister of Finance, Mr. Nash, in launching a Dominionwide drive for clothing last night. The effort, he said, would be under the direction of Unrra, and none of the goods would be sent to ex-enemy countries. ■ '. -...■ .-;; , , The Minister said that Unrra had recently asked the United States people to provide 150.000,0001b of good used clothing and Australia was making a drive for 5,000,0001b. The weight of articles collected in the Dominion could be made up by blankets as well as clothing, but lie stressed the need for all clothes being clean, mended and ready for use. Stating that clothing was desperately short, the Minister said the output from world mills for new textiles and new clothing was pitiably small for the needs of the liberated, countries owing to military and civilian demands. Millions of people in Europe would die this winter unless they were clothed in the next few months. Clothing would have to reach Europe for distribution in September. Of the 125,000,000 in need of clothing 30,000,000 were children.
