SMUGGLED ARMS
Discovery In Cases Of Empty
Beer Bottles
FROM AUSTRALIAN WAR ZONES
Rec. 1 p.m.
SYDNEY, this day.
The accidental bursting open of a crate of empty beer bottles during unloading operations on a Sydney wharf led to the seizure by the policy and Army officers of twelve Army revolvers and part of a trench mortar. The arms are believed to have been smuggled from the northern battle area.
The first indication of smuggled arms was when one of the cases slipped from a sling and crashed on to the wharf. A Service revolver was found among the glass from the broken bottles. On orders from an Army officer another case was opened, and a revolver was found. Twelve more revolvers were found in a subsequent search of the crates. A number of unopened cases have been taken away for examination. The cases were part of the first consignment of empty beer bottles to be returned to Sydney from -Australian bases in the Islands.
