HOUSING SHORTAGE
There are letters in the paper saying- that people should be compelled to let their unused rooms. There are two sides to every story- A , tew months ago, feeling sorry for pooi homeless families."' I let a small flat in my house. The people were awfully grateful, and were going to be such good tenants. However, the first thing they did was to go to the Fair Rents and have the rent reduced to a ridiculous sum, although I had only charged a low "rent m the first place. Although they have actually more rooms than my family have, we are crowded out of bathroom and washhouse, and even the passage is cluttered up with their belongings. They have been given a weekly wash day, but wash almost every day, with the result that my bill for water rates is alarming. Also, I am ashamed to let visitors of mine see the back yard. They have it m such a mess. I have done nothing about it. What can you do when they take the cheeky attitude ot "You can't do anything about us; try, and see how you get on." Houseowners should' have some authority to do something about unsatisfactory tenants, as we pay for the upkeep of the house and the rates. Until something has been done about this, I for one would never let rooms again. ONE WHO KNOWS.
