SUB-CENTRE'S WORK 1 NEW PRESIDENT ELECTED The Mayoress, Mrs. J. A. C. Allum, was elected president at the annual meeting of the Auckland City subcentre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society, held last night. She was the only nominee for the position.
In his anual report the chairman, Mr. A. K. Fenwick, referred to the excellent work accomplished at the instructional classes and in the voluntary aid department. The past year had been a particularly busy one for the Transport Corps, whose work constantly increased as more men returned from overseas. The average monthly mileage was now 35,000, and total mileage had now exceeded the million- mark. Members of the corps were entitled to hearty congratulations on this magnificent record. Members of" the Grey Ladies' unit had maintained their work in military hospitals with enthusiasm and regularity. The work of the comforts department recorded great activity in all sections during the year. The surgical sewing circle turned out 3410 items for military hospitals, both local and overseas, while a total of 269 garments had been made and dispatched by the spinning circle. The sewing circle had made a total of 7555 garments, and the wool knitting circle had dispatched 1565 garments to hospitals. The Red Cross shop, organised by the Victoria League, again had had a successful year, the takings amounting to £1500. Many members of the subcentre were doing valuable work in connection with the Prisoners of War Inquiry Office and the parcels packing department. The annual report and balance-sheet were adopted.

Paterson, paid a warm tribute to the splendid work accomplished by the •former president, the Rev. Canon R. Or. Coats, who was unable to take an active part in the work of the subcentre owing to ill-health.
