NOT STATE PURCHASE
AMERICAN CIGARETTES R.A. WELLINGTON, Friday. The Minister of Supply and Munitions, Mr. Sullivan, stated to-day that the recent report of the release of American cigarettes for the New Zealand public was substantially correct, but was in error in conveying the impression that the tobacco in question had been the subject of a Government purchase.
Mr. Sullivan said the United States Joint-" Purchasing Board had a quantity of cigarettes that could be made available to New Zealand. They were examined by the Wholesale Merchants' Federation, who completed the purchase and are distributing through retailers. Portion of the total quantity had been somewhat damaged, but owing to the shortage of cigarettes on the New Zealand market the best were being offered to the public.
