AIR FORCE DAY
SUM OP £1000 EXPECTED With a few returns still to come, it is expected that a sum of about £1000 will be realised by the Air Force Day pafriotic appeal held yesterday. The latest figure is £956, of which £523 was collected in the city. Birkenhead maintained its good reputation by raising the largest suburban amount, £96.
The wet weather had an unfavourable effect on the appeal, there being fewer people than usual in the city, and women collectors and schoolgirls had an unenviable time standing in the wind and rain. The weather also prevented the E.N.Z.A.F. from holding special exhibitions and interfered with a performance by the Papakura military band. A gun turret and a rubber dinghy were displayed outside the Chief Post Office, but the gun was not seen in operation. The appeal, however, was considered satisfactory, stated the secretary of the Auckland Metropolitan Patriotic Committee, Mr. H. Wylie, to-day.
