ARREST OF MAORI
ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGE
Special to Star
ROTORUA, this day. Victim of an alleged shooting affray in the bush between Mount Tarawera and the Waikaremoana Road, about 40 miles from Rotorua, on Thursday afternoon, Mr. Chris McDonald, aged 40, a half-caste Maori bushman, was admitted to the Rotorua hospital yesterday. A bone in his left arm near the elbow was shattered by a bullet, which also caused a superficial wound to his back in the region of the kidneys. His condition is quite satisfactory.
The injured man was given first aid by Mr. Norman Newton, who left him in a hut and reported the matter to the Rotorua police. A police party headed by Inspector M. J. Angland, and including Detective-Sergeant J. White, left Rotorua yesterday to investigate and arrested Henry Reginald Edwards, aged 60, a Maori bushworker, on a charge of attempting to murder Chris McDonald at Rerewhakaitu on June 28.
Accused appeared on the charge before justices of the peace in the Rotorua Magistrate's Court this morning. On the application of De-tective-Sergeant White he was remanded until next Friday.
