INFLUX OF NATIVES
OPIKI li/lARKET GARDENS
INADEQUATE HOUSING
O.C. PALMERSTON N., this day. Housing conditions in the market gardens at Opiki, where many Maoris are employed, have been strongly criticised by several local bodies concerned in recent months. Complaints have related to inadequate accommodation and sanitation caused as the result of a recent large influx of native labour for a big scheme for supplying vegetables to the forces.
A conference held here to-day, and attended by. representatives of the Horowhenua County Council, Palmerston Hospital Board, officers of the Agricultural, Education, Health, Labour and Native Departments, resolved, in the interest of public health, and good living conditions generally, strongly to recommend the Government that immediate action was necessary to provide adequate accommodation.
