The Twentieth Air Force announced that over 450 Super Fortresses to-day attacked' the port of Sasebo and the cities of Moji and Nobeoka, on Kyushu, and the industrial city of Okayama, on Honshu.
The Associated Press says that Sasebo is one of Japan's principal bases.
General Curtis Lemay, Commander of the Twentieth Air Force, announced that Super Fortresses on June 18 and 22 burned out 3.45 square miles of the Japanese industrial areas, increasing the total for 14 cities to 115 square miles.
American negro troops seized six new small islands in the Marianas in a reconnoitring operation to locate more areas where Super Fortresses could crash land while limping back from raids on Japan, reports the United Press correspondent on Guam.
The islands seized were Anatahan, Sairgan, Alamagan, Agrihan, Ascuncion and Maug Islands. They were not garrisoned and a native guide fired the only shot of the operation when a Japanese civilian refused to surrender. The troops took prisoner 24 Japanese civilians and 38 natives, mostly employed by the Japanese Copra Company.
