MEN AND WOMEN
MIXED PARLIAMENT
'FIFTY-FIFTY' SAYS MRS. ROSS
The new M.P. for Hamilton, Mi*3. H. Ross, was sworn in immediately after the opening of Parliament. She joins Miss M. B. Howard (Christchurch) as the second woman sitting in Parliament to-day, and is the sixth woman member to sit in the House of Representatives.
In a short interview in Wellington, Mrs. Ross said she considered local body work as good a training ground as any for women who wanted to enter Parliament. She did not consider it necessary for women to wait till they were middleaged to take such a step; rather was it that up till middle age their homes and families rightly claimed all their time and attention.
Asked what she considered the ideal balance of men and women members of Parliament, she answered: "Fifty-fifty. Why not? It takes a man and woman to run a home together." Men had the broader outlook and viewpoint, but by mixing more with men in public matters women would learn to achieve the longer view, too."
