SERVICEMEN AND PUBLIC

Two recent news items have rather puzzled some of us. First, the proposed expenditure of £25,000 by the Chambers of Commerce. Admittedly we do not know all the facts, but on the face of it it seems to us that this sum might have been used to better advantage had it been subscribed to the 1945 Victory Loan. Be that as it may, we rather resent the inference that an extensive advertising campaign is necessary to enable us to form our conclusions about the proposed control of the Bank of New Zealand. Secondly, in the reports of the two fires in the Remuera district we notice that these homes were unoccupied at the time. Remembering the acute housing shortage in this city, we wonder how many other large houses are without occupants, even for short periods. Incidentally we in the Services do not need to be informed that New Zealand is still at war and that only whole-hearted co-operation by all sections of the community can siDeed the day when we too will again be civilians. BEWILDERED SERVICEMAN.
