PROSECUTIONS LIKELY
FIRE CONTROL OFFENCES
The statement, that the board would have to take action against people whose foul chimneys resulted in outbreaks of fire and against motorists who parked on fire plugs was made by the chairman of the Auckland Metropolitan Fire Board, Mr. 8.-Brigham, at a meeting of the board yesterday. The chairman said that 17 fires last month were due to foul chimneys, and that this was by far the largest number resulting from any one cause. It was incorrect to say that the services of chimney sweeps could not be obtained. It cost 5/ to have a chimney swept, but £5 for the brigade to turn out.
Disregard of the regulation prohibiting the parking of motor vehicles on fire plugs was common, said the chairman, and action should also be taken in this matter. The fact that both types of offences were common was confirmed by the superintendent, Mr. W. L. Wilson, who pointed out that prosecutions also added to the brigade's difficulties, in that members had to be absent from duty to give evidence in Court.
