WORK OR PLEASURE

A CARPENTER'S EYESIGHT A carpenter's discrimination in revealing that he suffered from defective eyesight caused amusement at a sitting of the Auckland Industrial Manpower Committee this morning, when he appealed against his direction to employment with the Public Works Department at Karapiro. He disclosed that he was a motor cyclist, and mentioned an injury to an eye as one of his reasons for objecting to the direction. Recently, he said, he narrowly escaped serious injury when he stepped into a hole which he could not see on account of his poor eyesight. "A man like you should not be riding a motor cycle," commented Mr. K. Simpson, a member of the committee. "I know that, but I have a license, replied the appellant. "You should have revealed that you had poor eyesight," said Mr. Simpson. "No fear, I am not such a mug as that," declared the appellant amid laughter. The appeal was allowed.
