INQUIRY IN PUBLIC
REQUEST BY IMPORTERS
Urging that the Press and public be admitted to a meeting to be held in Wellington on July 3, when the question of tyre manufacture in New Zealand will be discussed, the Bureau of Importers (Auckland) has sent a telegram to the Minister of Supply, Mr. Sullivan, stating that a combined meeting of the executive of the bureau and New Zealand representatives of a number of United Kingdom tyre manufacturers had unanimously protested against such an important proposal being discussed without the Press being admitted.
The hearing of submissions before the Bureau of Industry for and against the proposed manufacture of motor tyres and tubes in New Zealand under the Industrial Efficiency Act, the Bureau of Importers' message added, might result in a right being given to establish a monopoly to manufacture tyres and tubes in the Dominion, which could mean the lockout of tyres from Britain.
