PROPOSED TREATY
FRANCE AND BRITAIN
Suggestion Well Received In London N.Z. Press Association—Copyright Rec. 2.30 p.m. LONDON, June 21. The French Consultative Assembly's resolution, proposing increased efforts by the French Government to secure a Franco-British treaty were warmly received in London, say diplomatic 'correspondents. It is pointed out that the British Government always wished for; such a treaty. The necessary negotiations were postponed only because it was thought better to await the results of the San Francisco Conference so that the final shape of the World Security Organisation, to which any instrument of alliance between Britain' and France would have to conform, would be known. It is not known whether the Franco-British negotiations would necessarily include a settlement of the Syrian-Lebanon problem,. or -whether that would remain a matter for separate discussion. All French civilians and employees at Latakia, in Syria, have been dismissed by the Syrian Government, says the British United Press Beirut correspondent. The situation at Latakia is described as uneasy. The French garrison accuses the Syrian gendarmerie of inciting colonial troops to desert. The Syrians deny the allegation.
