BRITISH AWARD
BEST U.S. FIGHTER PILOT Rec. 2 p.m. CANBERRA, this day. The King has awarded the British Distinguished Flying Cross to the American fighter pilot ace, Major Richard Bong, for his services in the South-west Pacific area.
The citation to the award, announced by the Governor-General, the Duke of Gloucester, stated that Major, Bong was the outstanding United States fighter pilot of the war. He shot down 40 enemy planes before he retired from combat flying in February last. His number of kills exceeds that of any other American or British ace during the war.
