BORNEO ASSAULT

NEW LANDING MADE

Australians In Big Oil Refining Centre

Rec. 1.30 p.m. NEW YORK, June 21. The Australian Ninth Division made a new landing on the west coast of Borneo. It was a shore to shore operation and the troops landed after a heavy naval bombardment. The Australians landed at Lutong and met only weak opposition. Lutong is the refinery centre for the Seria and Miri oilfields, where the Japanese have for some time been burning the oil installations. On the opposite side of the island, at Balikpapan, Allied heavy bombers have given the enemy another pounding. They have also attacked Kudat, at the northern end of the island of Borneo. Tokyo radio says that shore batteries sank an Allied minesweeper in Balikpapan Bay and forced others to retire. Balikpapan has been'shelled and bombed in the past few days, but there is no definite indication that an invasion is impending. _____
