NEW LYNN COUNCIL

Estimates of receipts and payments for 1940-46, as submitted by the Mayor, Mr S. Rickards, at a meeting of the New Lynn Borough Council, showed that receipts, excluding non-revenue items, totalling £2200, were expected to realise f2 M 78 ' including £15,098 from rates, £4200 from waterworks revenue, arid £1325 from license fees and permits.

. p /° vi |ion was made for an expenditure of £7655 by the Works Department, debt charges (£7093), hospital, fire board and E.P.S. levies (£2000), and expenditure in the waterworks department (£4000).

The Mayor said that the increase in the hospital levy would necessitate an additional hospital rate of lid in the £, making o h ,^ n i ot , al consolidated rate 3/, as against 2/10J last year. In the Kelston special rating area the consolidated, rate would be increased from 1/101 to 2/ in the f.

It was reported that 12 building permits of a total value of £6765,' had been issued during the month. In addition, the construction of 17 new State housing units had been commenced.

Application had been received from a company for permission to erect a temporary factory for experimental' purposes in the light industrial area, the company undertaking to reconstruct the building in permanent materials before the expiration of two years provided that the venture was successful. If the venture was not a success the company undertook to demolish the building Permission for the building was granted. The new foreman, Mr. G. J. Campbell was welcomed. A survey plan for the land which the council proposes to take under the Public Works Act for the purpose of extending the Portage Road Reserve, was submitted to the council. In connection with a report appearing in the Press recently concerning New Lynn's objection ,to participating in the Metropolitan Town Planning arrangements, the Mayor stated that the principal reason why the council objected to being a party to the scheme was that a town planning scheme was already in operation in the borough. The preparation of this scheme involved the expenditure of over £600, and until recent months was one bf the eight approved schemes in operation in the Dominion. The council i had shown commendable foresight in the early preparation of a scheme, and considered that it should not, at this stage, be called upon to contribute towards the cost of preparing a scheme for othet local bodies which had not exercised the same enterprise.
