WAGE BASIS UP
ESSENTIAL WORKERS RISE OF 10/ A WEEK P.A. WELLINGTON, this day. An amendment to the minimum weekly wage for essential undertakings was gazetted to-night. Under the original order, gazetted in 1942, where ordinary weekly earnings of an adult in an essential undertaking exceeded £5 10/. the minimum weekly wage to which he was entitled was £5 10/, irrespective of the time worked.
The new scale operates from May 1, and provides that, where the ordinary weekly wage exceeds £6, the minimum weekly payment shall be £6. In the case of female workers the comparable weekly rate is increased from £2 17/6 to £3 2/6, and in case of iunior workers, from £1 15/ to £2.
The new order defines more clearly what is meant by "ordinary weekly wage" and by the appropriate daily The purpose of the order is to ensure that workers engaged in an essential undertaking do not suffer because the undertaking for some reason is not able to work full time, provided they are able and willing to work normal hours.
