BUTCHERS RESTIVE
TRADING DIFFICULTIES EARLY IMPROVEMENT WANTED O.C. HAMILTON, this day. Referring to a message from Dunedin concerning the decision of the Dunedin butchers not to open business next Monday, the secretary of the Soum Auckland Master Butchers' Association to-day stated that members had expressed dissatisfaction for some time, not only with the existing retail price list, but also with the inadequacy of the subsidy, offered to the trade by the Government.
The butchers were unable to operate their business under the present conditions, he said. The position had become so serious that at a recent meeting of the association a resolution was carried that all butchers' shops in the South Auckland area, which covers the whole of the Auckland Province south of a 21-mile radius from Auckland, should close on June 30 until a satisfactory arrangement had been made with the Government. This proposal had the support of the remainder of the trade throughout the country. Subsequently, however, action in this direction was postponed, as negotiations with the stabilisation committee were in progress, and a promise obtained that a decision would be given by June 30 if possible.
