BRUTAL ATTACK
ON SYDNEY POLICEMAN
KICKED UNCONSCIOUS
O.C. SYDNEY, May IS. Soldiers and civilians kicked a police constable into unconsciousness last night in the Town Hall railway station. The man attacked, Constable Stanley Harris, 31, of Clarence Street Police Station, was taken by Central District ambulance to Sydney Hospital. He was admitted for observation, with concussion and injuries to the head, face, body and legs. He was too dazed to give a coherent account of the happening to Inspector Alford and other police who are investigating the attack. It is believed that hundreds of people witnessed the attack but did nothing, to help the policeman. Police were told that Constable Harris was called to the Town Hall station to stop a disturbance in which soldiers and civilians were involved. He had arrested a soldier, and was leading him away when six or seven men made a rush at him. Constable Harris was knocked down by heavy blows, and while he lay helpless on the ground "his attackers kicked him unmercifully. When he was unconscious and moaning on the floor his attackers and the man he had arrested ran away. A passer-by saw him lying not far from the new milk bar, and called other police.
Constable Harris lives in Westminster Street, Bexley.
