Mr. E. W. Batey, foreman of the Auckland Harbour Board, begins 12 months' leave of absence on May 31. Mr. Batey has been in the employ of the board for 36 years.
Mr. R. S. Kent, of the Public Trust Office, Christchurch, has been appointed assistant-solicitor to the Land Sales Court at Auckland.
Sir Patrick Duff, newly-appointed United Kingdom High Commissioner to New Zealand, has left Canada en route for New Zealand, according to a Press Association cable.
Wing-Commander W. V. CrawfordCompton, who returned last week from service with the R.A.F., was received this morning by the Mayor, Mr. Allum.
Professor W. M. Benson, of Dunedin, has been elected president of the Royal Society of New Zealand, and Dr. P. Marshall, of Wellington, has been re-elected vice-president.
