NAVAL FUNERAL

NORWEGIAN SAILOR

SHIP WAS TORPEDOED

Sixteen ratings and an officer of the Royal New Zealand Navy acted as pall-bearers and formed a firing party for the funeral of a member of the Royal Norwegian Navy, Gunner Gullik Gulliksen, at the Mariner's Chapel of the Flying Angel Missions to Seamen this morning. It was the first time that New Zealand naval men had acted in this capacity at the funeral of a Norwegian sailor.

The service, which was conducted by Canon H. IC. Vickery, port chaplain, was attended by the Norwegian Consul, Mr. Donald Millar, Mr. H. Scott, representing the' Norwegian Shipping and Trade ' Mission, and Norwegian merchant seamen.

Gunner Gulliksen, whose home was in Sandefjord, was 37 years of age. He was married and had been away from his home since the outbreak of war. Before March, 1941, he had been in a whaling vessel, but joined the Royal Norwegian Navy, as a gunner and served in several merchant ships. In December, 1941, his ship was torpedoed, but he continued in the service until December, 1944. when he signed off in New Zealand on account of illhealth and became a patient at the military annexe, Auckland Hospital.
