LOST AIR LINER
CHARGE OF THEFT
YOUTH BEFORE COURT
Arrested on the night of Sunday, May 13, not long after the total destruction by fire of Union Airways' 15-passenger Lockheed Lodestar monoplane Karoro on the Mangere airfield, Frederick Demchy (19), assistant air engineer, appeared in the Police Court this afternoon on a charge of stealing the aircraft, which was valued at £40.000. Detective-Sergeant W. R. Fell prosecuted and accused was represented by Mr. P. B. Fitzherbert. Matthew Henry A. Mangham, station engineer for Union Airways at Mangere, gave formal evidence concerning the Karoro. The machine, he said, was ready for service on Monday morning. There was only enough fuel in the tanks for about two hours' flying. After inspecting the marks made by the plane witness estimated that the machine had been off the ground for about a chain.
