Auckland Grammar School. Prior to joining the Army he was employed by an Auckland accountancy firm. After serving 15 months in the Army he was transferred to the Navy under Scheme B. He left for England in December, 1943, and received his training m H.M.S. King Alfred, specialising in navigation. After receiving his commission he was appointed to escort duty.
