NEW PRESS CODE
ISSUED IN AMERICA
Many Restrictions Lifted Or Modified
N.Z. Press Association —Copyright Rec. 2 p.m. WASHINGTON, May 18. The Office of Censorship has modified the Press and radio code, removing many restrictions on news within the United States,. Europe and the Atlantic, and has issued a new code, applying mainly to the Pacific and Asiatic theatre. The Pacific theatre is defined as the south-western Alaskan Peninsula and the land and water areas of the entire Pacific, except South American coastal waters, and extending westward on land and sea to, and including, Aden and Capetown. The new code eliminates restrictions on all weather information, news of sabotage and air raids, troop movements (except in the Pacific), ship construction, plane movements (except in the Pacific), production figures (except for specialised military material), exports and imports, prisoners of war, location of art treasures, movements of diplomatic missions, and the- President's movements.
The new code retains restrictions on the location and movement of naval and merchant ships in the Pacific and the Atlantic, but Atlantic movements will probably soon be publishable. The censorship director,- Mr. Byron Price, said that every provision still in force was based solidly and sensibly on visible security requirements relating to the war against Japan. He emphasised that the relaxations do not modify war correspondents' obligations to clear dispatches through the army and navy censorship, even if they refer to subjects free from restrictions under civilian regulations.
