SCIENTISTS IN WAR
GOVERNOR-GENERAL'S TRIBUTE
P.A. WELLINGTON, Friday. "There is no branch of science which has not contributed magnificently to the solution,- of- war problems," said the Governor-General, Sir Cyril Newall, addressing the annual meeting of the council of the Royal Society of New Zealand. "May I here pay a humble tribute to all /the scientists of New Zealand and the Empire, including those who have toiled in obscurity, for their resolute endeavours. They have saved many thousands of British lives and contributed in large measure to the total defeat of Germany as, we are confident, they will contribute to the defeat of the Japanese. "It has been said that, although in the past we British perhaps led the world in the field of pure science, we have not been equally good in applying it. Now, however, we have effectively shown we can apply science to every aspect of our war effort. We can look forward to still closer co-operation between the ' scientists and those responsible for the -many aspects of the welfare of mankind."
