OVER 40,000 RETURNED

P.A. WELLINGTON, Monday. By the end of March 40,544 men and 405 women, making a total of 41,009, had returned to New Zealand from service with the forces overseas according to a return compiled by the Rehabilitation Department. The demobilisation of home service personnel totalled 27,606, including 1170 women. Of the total from home and overseas service 18,710 had returned to their former employer, including the Public Service, 25,781 were in other private employment, 12,394 had not yet been discharged, had returned to service or were on leave in hospital recuperating. A total of 3208 had returned to their own business or farm, 2928 had acquired their own business or farm, 1068 were in full-time training, 1578 in State employment, and 1460 had not decided on their future, had refused help or had not been traced or had temporarily lost contact with the authorities.
