92 YEARS OLD

MRS. ELIZABETH WALTERS The ninety-second birthday of Mrs. E. Walters was quietly celebrated at her home, Lake Road, Devonport, on Thursday last. Mrs. Walters arrived in Auckland from Oxford, England, on January 30, 1574, with her late husband, Mr. Jesse Walters, and baby daughter, who was born that morning off Tiri. They arrived by the barque Lauderdale, under the command of Captain James True. Passengers and crew numbered 106, and the voyage took 100 days. After spending ten weeks in Auckland they moved to Devonport central, where they lived for 2i years before settling for some years at Old Lake Road. From here she went to her present home, where she has lived for some 63 years. °

Mrs. Walters has seen Devonport grow from about two dozen houses to its present size. One of the biggest thrills of her time was attending the first race meeting at the Shore. Mrs. Walters has a wonderful memory, but her general health since Christmas has not been of the best. Mr. Walters died many years ago, leaving her with a family of twelve children, of which four sons and three daughters are living. There are 20 grandchildren and 25 greatgrandchildren.
