FIRE IN SHIP'S HOLD
P.A. DUNEDIN, Friday. Shortly after three o'clock this afternoon, thick columns of smoke began to rise from No. 3 hold of the Union Steam Ship Company's coastal vessel Waipiata, which was unloading at Victoria wharf. Four engines of the central fire brigade arrived and the outbreak was well in hand within 40 minutes. There was no structural damage to the vessel itself, but some of the cargo of bales of paper was damaged by water. It is expected that the vessel will be able to leave for Oamaru on Sunday, as scheduled.
