BIBLE INTEREST

NEW YORK. Interest in Bible reading, which increased considerably during last year, has been sustained during 1944, a nation-wide survey just completed by the Institute of Public Opinion finds. The survey was conducted at the suggestion of the American Bible Society. On the basis of the survey results, about six out of every ten Americans (62 per cent) have taken time out one or more times during the past vear to read the Bible. Lafet year the figure was 64 per cent; in 1942, 48 per cent. It is notable that the increased interest in the Bible during the past two years is coincident with an unusually high public interest in books dealing with religious themes. Both Llcyd C. Douglas' "The Robe" and Franz Werfel's "The Song of Bernadette" were, for example, purchased by hundreds of thousands of readers and were high on "bestseller" lists. "The Robe" is still listed as a best-seller, more than two years after its publication. More young people read the Bible last year than in the previous year. The "actual figure for those. 21 to 29 vears of age last year is 59 per cent during 1943 and 48 per cent during 1942. This does not include members of the armed forces.
