QUEEN'S INTEREST
TALKS WITH AUSTRALIANS MBS. EVATT AND MRS. FORDE The Queen has received Mrs. Forde and Mrs. Evatt. In a 20-minute audience the Queen asked Mrs. Forde about her children, remarking that they were near the ages of the Princesses, about food rationing and about the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, says the correspondent of the Melbourne Herald. Mrs. Forde said later that she found the Queen little altered since their last meeting in 1927, when the King (as Duke of York) opened the Commonwealth Parliament. She told the Queen about Australia's war effort, particularly her primary production. The Queen said that Australia's effort was appreciated in England, and praised the Australian servicemen in England. Receiving Mrs. Evatt, the Queen, in a half-hour audience, questioned her about Canberra and was interested to hear how the capital had grown. She recalled planting some poplars there, and was told by Mrs. Evatt that she would not recognise the spot. It was now a beautiful avenue of trees.
