DAN MASON BRILLIANT LAST WAR ATHLETE
Writing in a southern exchange, Mr. J. K. Moloney, the well-known Canterbury sports administrator, paid a high tribute to the ability as a half-miler of Dan Mason, of Auckland. "Mason I remember very well," stated Mr. Moloney. He was in the same unit as myself in the last war, and 1 have vivid memories of the day at Stocktm Park, Codford, when he had an afternoon out. A great performer, he could do anything The sports officer of the 3rd Canterbury Regiment asked me what I thought of him. I was staggered by . his brilliance. The day he was to compete at Stamford Bridge the 4th Brigade left for France and Mason spent the next 12 months r °Ma h so n n S who now resides at. Point Chevalier, came into full prominence overseas during the last war and he was credited with some half-miles Probably his best performance was at Glasgow in 1919, wh™n he cut two-fifths of a second off the Scottish 880 yards lecoids, covering the distance m 1.55 2-o. Mason was also a splendid miler and he returned 4.20 1-5 when he won the British international mile at Stamford Bridge in 1918, beating the header of the title, N. N. Nicholls, easily.
