NEW FIRST LADY

PRESIDENT'S WIFE

IMPRESSION OF MRS. TRUMAN

Rec. 11. WASHINGTON, April 13,

The new President's wife, Mrs. Bess Wallace Truman, was formerly a Missouri schoolteacher. She lived in Washington in a five-room apartment without domestic help. She cooked meals, washed dishes and scrubbed pans. In * contrast, the White House has perhaps the most efficiently organised household staff in America.

The new "first lady" is a trim, homely person. She is beginning a life of which she never dreamed. She probably won't be named as one of the ten best-dressed women. Nevertheless, she dresses in excellent taste, usually wearing tailored suits and becoming hats. She has curly, greying hair. Mrs. Truman is a better listener than she is a talker. She has always acted as her husband's secretary.

Her daughter, Miss Mary Margai Truman, aged 21, has already been styled the "White House princess." She is a popular member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. She has sung with tne Denver Opera Company as a soprano.
