DAMAGE TO ROADS
GOVERNMENT SERVICES
COUNTY COUNCIL COMMENT
O.c. WHANG ARE I, this day. "Government-operated road services are damaging the roads and not paying a penny towards their upkeep," said Mr. Bates at a meeting of the Bay of Islands County Council. He mentioned that roads in the Kerikeri Riding, originally built 9ft wide and 9in deep, were now spread out over 24ft. The chairman, Mr. T. Atkinson, said that in many places, even on heavily metalled roads, they were showing their mark. "We used to get something from the other road runs; we get nothing now from the road services," said Mr. McKenzie. "We will have to do something about it soon," added the chairman. "The position is becoming impossible. I will bring it up before the Main Highways Board." ■
