HASTINGS COMPLAINT
LABOUR SHORTAGE ACUTE
P.A. HASTINGS, this day. An acute position is being experienced in both freezing works in the district due to manpower shortage, which threatens to become more serious within a few days when a further 60 men may probably be drawn for military purposes. Any curtailment of the present output of the works will have serious repercussions on the stock raising industry. In addition to the present shortage! of staff at the works appeals in respect of more than 60 A grade men have been recommended by the Freezing Works Manpower Utilisation Committee. These are to be heard by the Appeal Board next Tuesday, and it is likely these men will be lost to the industry within a few days, making a total shortage of about 110 men in both works. The position is said to be particularly serious on account of the stock offering being far in excess of the killing capacity at the works.
