GOLF COURSES

Mr. Clements' counter-attack does not help some of his own statements regarding the need for the working man's game of golf. My positive contribution was that both Maungakiekie and Glendowie should be restored as golf courses, if necessary one for returned men and the other as a public course. Why should golfers have to go to "the ends of the earth" whilst other sports have their areas increased at the expense of golf courses? My prediction is that after the war a much greater demand for golf will take place. Because it requires a large area of land is no excuse for a penalty rating fee. In this way Mr. Clements apparently hopes to make golf more accessible to working people. Any other brilliant ideas can be stated without a peregrination to negation. Supposing his innocent-looking "yes" really concealed a "great gulf" and the borough council was to fall into it— I hasten to point out that One Tree Hill's area of park reserve amounts to one-sixth of the total borough area and no complaints were made against the existing order of things until the trustees cut out the link that cheers. Surely out of 422 acres room could be found for a much needed -golf course. STANLEY S. HAMILTON.
