ISLAND TRADE

FRUIT FROM TONGA Surprise that fuller opportunity was not taken of developing trade with Tonga was expressed by Mr. W. H. Fortune, who served with the N.Z.E.F. as a senior officer in Tonga and later was in the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Force, during a luncheon address on Pacific experiences to the Auckland Creditmen's Club to-day. In view of the prices paid for fruit in New Zealand and the fact that fruit was to be seen rotting in Tonga, Mr. Fortune considered that there was plenty of scope for trade with the Dominion. New Zealand troops stationed in Tonga had cultivated land and had grown many varieties of vegetables for their own use. Most of the men felt that the problem of fruit supply for the New Zealand market could be largely solved by the development of trade with the Islands.
