AIMED STRAIGHT FOR HEART OF CITY

SPLITTING GARRJSON Russian Two-Way Drive Into Vienna N.Z. Press Association —Copyright Rec. 12.30 p.m. LONDON, April 9. The Russians, splitting Vienna garrison with a two-way drive through suburban streets, aimed straight for the centre of the city, agency correspondents in Moscow reported earlier. Two forces from the west and south were fighting steadily forward, closely linked byfield radio towards the appointed meeting place in the centre of the city. The Red Air Force had struck down the Luftwaffe opposition. Russian observation planes , were hovering over street junctions and squares, guiding the advance of the storm troops. Leaflets were being showered down on the city heralding its liberation -and calling on the people for co-operation against the Germans. Loud-speakers in. forward areas were urging the people to hamper German demolitions. Marshal Malinovsky's forces were fanning out- from the bridgehead over the Morava River to the Vienna-Brno highway, 10 to 15 miles west of the river. Russian guns are firing on the highway, which is the main escape route for the Vienna garrison. Russian planes were strafing it from end to end. Marshal Malinovsky's right wing was pushing towards Brno. Reuters correspondent believes that every Russian advance in this sector tightens the bag being drawn around the Germans in Central Czechoslovakia, and presses against the German defences on the long road to Prague. Collapse Seems Near Late dispatches from Moscow state that the collapse of resistance in Vienna seems, near. At least five of 20 districts . into which Vienna is divided is reported to be in Russian hands. . Russian mobile units leaving Vienna in the rear, are sweeping on towards Linz, along the Vienna-Linz autobahn. They are now 25 miles west of Vienna and are manoeuvring to. cut off the German grouping against the bank of the Danube. Simultaneously; with the development of the advance against Linz. the Russians in Konigsberg are approaching the central part of the fortress. Vasl fires are reported in the city, the early fall of which is believed to be inevitable.
