LEAGUE PLAYER'S DEATH OVERSEAS
The last roll call has been answered by yet another fine young Auckland sportsman, Phil D.onovan. The popular Marist League five-eighths was recently' reported accidentally killed on active service. He is a brother of the well-known footballers, Eugene and Alan (City Rovers) and Jack Donovan, the League referee. Phil played his football ' always with Marist and went through the lower grades to win a place in the senior team in 1937. He was a powerful attacking back and perhaps best known by his fine sportsmanship. Phil went overseas to the Middle East some three years ago, and played good football in games between the divisional teams. The sympathy of all League followers goes to his wife and to the Donovan family.
