Lack Of Wind Spoils Contest Only Two Craft Finish
The revival of the ocean race for the Balokovic Cup last week end produced a disappointjjig contest, in contrast to tempestuous weather which had been experienced in prewar races this year's race was marred by a lack of wind. Of four starters only two, Aromoana and Rangi, crossed the finishing line. Though a field of 13 was handicapped for the race quite a few had not en The light airs suited the light displacement boat Aromoana and she made a runaway of the race from the start. The race stated at 10 o clock on Saturday morning and the first leg was to Canoe Rock, off Kawau. This Aramoana reached at 4.30 m the afternoon followed by Rangi, about two hours later, while Atea did not make this mark until the early hours of Sunday morning. Cyrena, the other starter, was becalmed in the Tiri passage for a long period and eventually got a tow back to town. The other three carried on, getting a light north-easterly on the run to the second mark, the Cow and Calf Islets off the entrance to Coromandel, Aromoana rounded the mark about 8 oclock on Sunday morning and crossed the finishing line at Rocky Bay, Waiheke at 2.30 p.m. Rangi rounded the Coromandel mark about the time Aramoana was finishing and reached the finishing line at 8.45 p.m., nearly six hours behind the winner Atea, owned by Eric Chambers, after rounding Canoe Rock had httle, or no wind, and( making straight for the Waiheke Passage, retired.
