HUGE GRAVING DOCK
Liner Queen Mary Could Be Accommodated SYDNEY'S £9,000,000 PROJECT Rec. 2 p.mi SYDNEY, this day. The new Sydney graving dock, which will be opened next week by the Duchess of Gloucester,, has already cost more than £8,000,000; and it is estimated that the final cost will be £9,000,000. The original estimated cost was only £2,997,000. - The Minister, of .Works, Mr. Lazzarini, staled that this prepared in 1939. Later alterations and addition's involved a considerable enlargement of the dock. These alterations would increase the cost to £4147,000 on the basis of 1939 figures, but investigations had revealed that the original estimate of £2 997,000 was too low, even on 1939 figures, and substantial increases in the cost of materials, and also labour costs, had meant large increases in the total cost. The dock has already been in yse and is sufficiently large to accommodate the super-liner Queen Mary comfortably.
